  1. As suggested in topic, I have gotten hold of a more recent machine to remake into Unraid server. This one arrives with 12x4TB SAS 3,5" drives in 3 bays, on the original SmartArray P816i-a SR Gen10. From what I have found, it seems drives on that card will run in HBA mode if not configured to an array. Sounds fine to me. If I wanted to keep sane, I'd probably just install Unraid, and be done with it. I don't want to keep sane In my current setup, I have a 8 TB SATA for parity, and another that I haven't installed yet. Other drives are 2, 3 and 4 TB for a total of 11 data drives. I also have a 128GB SATA SSD cache installed. Would I gain performance by purchasing a new SAS 8 TB disk for parity, instead of reusing my current 8's? Would I gain performance by running all disks in a bay (SAS backplane) on SAS, and not mix SAS and SATA on the same channel on the controller? Should I install my new SSD cache disks (2x480GB SATA 2,5") on the current RAID card, or maybe rather on (probable) onboard SATA ports? I believe there is a fourth SAS channel on the card, and I got breakouts to connect them outside of the bays, to keep it homegrown. If it is not recommended to use the SA P816i-a or onboard SATA, should I try to reuse controllers from my current build? System devices tells me I have an Adaptec 1430 SA (unknown number of ports, 4?), Highpoint Rocketraid 230x 4 port SATA II and a LSI SAS2008 SAS-2 (Probably an HBA:d IBM Serverraid, 2 or more SAS connectors) My vaugeness here is from buying and installing this stuff a long time ago, and just checking Unraid system devices now to see what I got. Should I try to get hold of a 10Gbit ethernet card for my old server, to transfer data to my new server, the new has one installed already. I have bad experiences with mounting drives outside of the array to copy files, I'd rather set up an empty array and copy (Rsync?) the files across. What could be good value for money, and good track record with SFP(+) ports, I can find HP 552 and 562 and others at my local used hardware dealer. Well, many questions, I'm hoping for some initiated answers. I'd rather be stopped before I start doing stupid things, than to discover them after doing all the hard work. /Lars Olof Norell
  2. Hi everyone. I am looking into leveraging my server for my book collection. I try to store my "acquired" books in Nextcloud (17) on my Unraid (6.6.6, how will I ever be able to upgrade her). When looking into a server solution I found an obsolete Nc app, files_opds, unsupported since Nc13 or such. Trying to force enable it was no good, so I dropped that thread. Now I am trying to use the linuxserver calibre docker for serving my books. But what would be a proper way to access my books from it? I don't feel comfortable with pointing it (the "library" volume mount) to the files in the Nextcloud file structure, and importing everything. I still want to keep the books in one place on the server, and be able to keep them synced to other machines with Nc. Any suggestions on a proper way to handle the books, or alternative software to help me out? Calibre seems neat and all, even if a native Nc app would be a great fit for me. I thought I'd put it here instead of the container threads, since the question is not really related to any specific app or container. /Lars Olof
  3. Thanks JB. Since this is a process involving moving all drives to a new chassie and everything around it, I'll just try cleaning and reseating everything, then make a rebuild. That ought to show if it was just a stroke of bad luck, or bad HW.
  4. Here's the diags files, for anyone interested. tower-diagnostics-20180603-1303.zip
  5. Started migrating my old 5 rig a while ago. Had a couple of probs with connectors and the usual stuff, but got it up and running. Except for one drive. It is currently disabled, and the only thing I can see is 4 CRC errors in SMART. Luckily I saved the syslog from that first boot when the drive went AWOL, and a bit later a full diagnostics file. I'll attache the syslog here and add the diags file in a moment. In this syslog things start to derail at 12:31:10. Obviously unR want nothing to do with the drive right now, but can I make it change it's mind? Could there have been a dusty connector or other fixable problem causing this? Oh, the array is up and running, but degraded. syslog.zip
  6. I guess I can live without those 4 GHz, and 22 MB cache, really, but it will feel strange to let the opportunity pass I’ll just have to keep telling myself that power consumtion alone will keep me a happy man. I have to wait and see what I can get hold of first, a huge chassi or a decent amount of memory at the right price...
  7. I am not sure what path to continue. I got myself a SuperMicro X7DBE+ with dual cpus (Xeon x5460) and 32 GB to upgrade my server to v6. As it is a huge motherboard, it wouldn’t fit my chassi. I got hold of a used proliant chassi, and discovered it still had mb, cpu and raid controller installed. Now I can’t decide what to use. The raid controller is a hp smart array p410, and based on info here, will not be used. Afaik this server has one xeon E5507 2,26GHz and nine memory slots for 8500 and 10600 RAM. The SuperMicro card won’t fit into the Proliant chassi. My intended use is primary for storage (currently 11 drives total) and running Plex. With unRaid 6, I’ll probably run some hobby VMs and Dockers, but nothing requiring much performance. Based on above info, should I buy memory (12,24GB?) for the Proliant (1 E5507, PC10600 RAM), or should I find another chassi for the SuperMicro (2 X5460 , 32 G 533MHz PC2 FB-dimm?) I am not familiar with processor performance, what is the difference between the two, except for the obvious with generations and stuff... Lars Olof
  8. So there is no useful speed increase to be expected if I run an SSD on the 2720 card? Unfortunately the onboard and Adaptec won't give me more ports than I have today, and that's something I really want if I rebuild my server.
  9. I'd like some feedback on what interfaces I should use for best performance and reliability in my future server. I got myself a Supermicro X7DBE+ with plenty of RAM and CPU (for my intended use). I have a bunch (10 right now) of mixed old 1,2 and 3 TB drives, any new ones would probably be 4 TB. Also 3 5-slot Icy-Dock drive bays. My choice of interfaces are: 1. 6 x onboard Intel Blackford 5000P ESB2 3Gb SATA 2. 8 x Highpoint Rocketraid 2720SGL 6Gb SAS/SATA PCIe 2.0 x8 3. 4 x Highpoint Rocketraid 2300 SATA 3Gb PCIe x1 (x4?) 4. 4 x Adaptec 1430 SATA 3Gb PCIe x4 Why would I, and wouldn't I use any of these interfaces for my array? Right now I'd like at least 12 ports available. Where should I install my parity and the SSD for cache? I am looking for cables for the SAS card. Would any 8087 to 4xSATA do? How much difference in quality is there? They come from $5 on ebay to $30 in my local shop (and that's only the unbranded ones...) Is there any reason to transfer my Intel Pro 1000 network card? The board got a "ESB2/Gilgal 82563EB Dual-Port Gigabit". I guess that's about as good as it gets...
  10. It's been a long time since I went here, and my good old unRAID 5/i3/2GB have just been chugging along most of the time. But now I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell. Or rather a new system to support VMs. I am looking at salvaging an Adaptec 1430 4xSATA and Intel Pro/1000 from my current system. The PSU and disk bays will also come along. The new hardware I am looking at is a Supermicro X7DBE+, LGA 771/Socket J, 2 x Intel Xeon X5460, 32G. I also have a RocketRaid 2300 4xSATA and an RocketRaid 2720 (2710?) 8xSAS2. The setup looks a bit overkill for my needs, but I get a good price. Today I run 6 SATA onboard and 4 on the Adaptec, plus one ESATA onboard to a external dock. I got 15 bays of Icy 5-in-3s, and possibly some room for internal SSDs, so 16 ports would be nice. The Supermicro got 6 on board. I have no doubts the supermicro will work with unRAID 6, but what about the RocketRaids? Am I wrong if I think I can run SATA drives on the 2720? Is there support for RR in base Linux kernel, or are external drivers needed? The previous owner ran windows, so he can not advise. I just want to have an idea what to expect before I tear down the old install to find out the board won't fit in my case. Lars Olof (Realised I posted in the wrong place, so deleted and reposted)
  11. I'll look into this for 5.0.6 release. So we're basically still just waiting for you to take a look into this? Maybe you could take that look after making the v6 final? (together with other minor touch ups...) Just hoping for a fixed final v5, don't want or need to convert my 2gb i3 server with plex to 64 bit vm and docker right now. Maybe at a later time.
  12. I, for myself am looking for a update with fixed Intel network driver (if there is a working fix that shouldn't be a biggie). And also, like many others, the promised GUI update (no idea how much work that is). I don't ask for any other features being backported from 6. I may try 6 out when I can get hold of a machine to play around, but my 10 drive server is still on 5, and will remain so until I have played a bit with a more mature 6.
  13. Hi all. Looking to get my DVDs on file and starting playing them from the network. Currently I don't really know what is a good way to set it all up. Today I have my server (soon running 5.0 final, I hope), my mac Mini that I plan to use for ripping, a windows laptop in case it's needed and my trusty old Panasonic 42"Plasma. Also an x360. I haven't invested in BD's, since the tv only does 720. I have ripped a few of my DVDs already, for vacation use. I used Handbrake for ripping to h.264 and later found MetaX for labeling it. My question is twofold; 1. What would be a good way to rip the DVDs. Storage space is not a problem, I got plenty. Suggestions for a good workflow, anyone? I am not in a hurry, and do not plan to invest in a multi-drive ripping rig. I could spend a few bucks on useful software, though. 2. How do I play them? Software for my Tower, and a hardware player at my TV? I also have a couple of laptops and ipads that would be nice to use once in a while. And music? I got a load, but still no networked players. I would love a partitioned system, so my daughter could be let loose with the remote without finding dad's Punishers, Rambos and other stuff. Today I mostly use VLC and navigation to the SMB shares to access my media from desktop and laptops. Most of the DVDs are movies, some are kids cartoon series, nearly none are TV-series. My music is mostly MP3s with some others thrown in for good measure. So, anyone have suggestions?
  14. 1. Get a job. Self-employed now, bores me and not enough work to pay the bills in the long run. 2. Get 700 dvds on disk and get a player setup that works both for me and my 3yo girl. Advice appreciated in other thread. 3. Deadlift 180 kg 1x3, Squat 180 kg 1x3, Bench 100 kg 1x5, Press 60 kg 1x5 The more, the merrier. /Lars Olof
  15. Hi all. I had a topic running a while ago about me accidentally nuking the ReiserFS from orbit, on a non-array disk on my server. I left it at a high probability that I lost all data on that disk. I'd just like to know if anyone knows of a tool that can read and recover the raw data area of a ReiserFS disk and try to recover something. I believe I haven't touched the data area, so the bits and bytes should still be there. Original thread is here: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=16638.msg152742#top. Thanks to Joe L. for helping me out that time. /Larson
