Nothing irreplaceable - primarily blu-rays I can rip again. But pretty time-consuming.

When I launched Unraid, it started I set it to rebuild parity on that one parity drive (which I'm also sensing was a mistake?) I guess I was kind of hoping there's a solution for the drive concerned, such as an unformat command, to simply unroll whatever Unraid managed to do in the 1 minute it was labeled as a parity drive.

I'm using version 6.8.3, but the disk at issue no longer has a number, as I started the array w/o that disk to avoid anything being written over it (Hopefully that didn't destroy any chances of recovering information, but I didn't write down the disk order before I did the new config, so couldn't figure out a way to start the array in the same disk order). I just made a mistake (big one). I removed three old drives from the array and ran the New Configuration Utility. Unfortunately, I forgot about there now being the option of two parity drives, and I assigned one of my good data drives as a second parity, instead of as a data drive. As the array was restarting, I realized my mistake but could not stop it. I unplugged the server, rebooted, and ran the utility again, this time with the drive as a data drive. However, I now have an error message that says "Unmountable: No File System". Is there any way to restore the prior file system? Thanks, Carl.

Thank you again - that sounds simple enough that I'll err on the side of caution and pick up an HBA such as the H310. I'd rather trade-off a bit of money for convenience. Carl.

Ashman, thank you for this helpful response. One follow-up question (and forgive my ignorance) on the Dell H310. As indicated, I already have two Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards, and also I have a friend with a spare AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 card he can give me. Is the Dell H310 still needed, or would one of these Supermicro cards do? Does the HBA do something other than simply providing ports (beyond my technical abilities, but something to do with working with a port expander to see individual drives?) I had an incident where a power cable shorted out after rubbing against the fan, and it shorted the backplane of my Norco 4224, which in turn fried several drives. So now I would like to replace the case, and maybe upgrade a bit. From what I’ve read, the SuperMicro is a step above, but still affordable. My primary use is as storage for movies, mostly BDs, but I would like to expand to UHD movies in the future. Here’s what I have: Motherboard: SuperMicro MBD-X10SL7-F-O (has 8 SAS2, 6 SATA). CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1241 v.3 RAM: Crucial 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Power Supply: Seasonic Platinum-1050W (would like to keep using this, if possible) Adapter: 2 x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 (Appears I may not need these with the case I’m looking at?) HDDs: Variety of sizes from 3-8TB, want ability to have 24, and to expand to larger drives in future. Fans: 3 x Noctura NF-F12, 2 x Noctura NF-R8 (I’ve heard the SuperMicro is LOUD, so wondering if these fans would work in it?) It looks like the ideal replacement for the Norco 4224 may be the Supermicro 846E16-R1200B with BPN-SAS2-846EL1 backplane. (Found refurb for $400 on Ebay). My questions: 1. Is there anything listed above I could not reuse (other than the AOC-SASLP-MV8 cards, which may not be needed?)? Would my existing fans help quiet it down? 2. Which cable would I use to connect to the motherboard? I heard it uses one SFF-8643, but if I did that, would I be connecting it to the slower SATA ports instead of the faster SAS2 ports? 3. Is this fast enough to stream UHD? Multiple streams? 4. Would this work with 10TB or larger drives? Per this chart on SuperMicro’s site, the SAS2 backplane works with drives up to 8TB, but it shows the SAS3 as working with the 10TB Seagate drives. Thank you for any feedback. Carl.

I tried unbalance, unfortunately it appears to require that sufficient space exist on at least one drive to transfer files. I'm moving 2TB of Movies from Drive 20, and the other drives in the Movies share have about 400-600GB free each. So I'm going to have to move data over manually and spread it out over several drives. What I'm really pondering, though, is whether I should exclude the drive from the share while there's still data on it from that share, whether I should move the data over first, or whether that doesn't matter.

I have an existing Movies share with data on every drive, and want to exclude Drive 20 from that share, so I can put all of my music in a share on that drive. I'm thinking the process should be: 1. Exclude drive 20 from the Movies share. 2. Move the Movies data from drive 20 directly to other drives that make up the Movies share (thereby avoiding the user share copy bug?) Is this the right way to do it? Should I reverse steps 1 & 2? Or does it even matter? Thanks for any help. Carl.

BRiT, I looked into unBalance - seems like a great solution for clearing a drive before updating or reformatting to XFS. But I'm not seeing how it would help consolidate parts of a folder spread among several drives. Here's an illustration of what I face: Disk 1: Avatar (2009)/Avatar (2009).mkv Avatar (2009)/Avatar (2009)-poster.jpg Disk 2: Avatar (2009)/Avatar (2013)-fanart.jpg Disk 3: Avatar (2009)/Avatar (2009)-trailer.jpg Avatar (2009)/banner.jpg In this instance, I'd be looking to move the Avatar folders on disks 2 and 3 into the Avatar folder on disk 1. unBalance could probably do this, but in a laborious manner, by moving every drive to other drives enough times that it ends up scooping up the dispersed folders, but I'm hoping there is a simpler way to do that, as I have a lot of drives. I have a share (Media), with the following subfolder structure: Movies A-L\MovieFolder\MovieTitle.mkv I just realized that I've had the wrong split level (3 instead of 2) since creating the share, resulting in individual movie folders being spread among all of my disks instead of each movie folder being on just one disk. Now that I've change the share split level to 2, is there a graceful way to apply it to existing movie folders, so they are consolidated with each movie folder being on just one drive? That's a pretty massive set of servers. The case has the stock fans. Works great, but they are loud (not that I minded, as I kept the server in a media closet in the basement). Oh and it shipped out today. Cheers, Carl.
