sch1308
My plan is to install unraid onto a flash drive (for booting) then using the SSD as a cache drive (and plex metadata/transcode storage). I will be running Plex, and sonarr and serve roughly 8 streams at a time. HellDiverUK
I replied to your thread on Reddit, but basically, too much RAM, add another SSD, and perhaps the motherboard isn't the best choice. Quote Link to comment
StevenD
... too much RAM... Funniest thing I have read today! Max out every motherboard, especially when RAM prices are down right now. Quote Link to comment

Pducharme
I have 32GB RAM and it's not too much... If you want to dedicate 4-6 or 8GB to VMs, it's a necessity to have a lot, and like the StevenD said, price is low, MAX-it now ! Quote Link to comment
SSD
I would recommend you invest in drive cages (5in3s or 4in3s). Being able to swap out a disk without risking knocking a cable loose in the process is priceless. Consider this all-to-common use case: 1 - Drive red-balls 2 - Purchase and replace old drive with new drive (requires opening the case and replacing old drive with new drive) 3 - Preclear new drive - success 4 - Begin drive rebuild 5 - Another disk red-balls 6 - User panics This is almost always caused by a disk having its cabling disturbed when swapping out a failed drive. Buy drive cages, or consider a case with built in cages. Once the connections are burned in, you can go YEARS without opening the case through multiple drive additions, replacements, and upgrades. bonienl
I bought drive cages right from the beginning and initially I didn't need all slots, but adding or replacing drives without opening the case is really worth the investment, personally I never regretted. Quote Link to comment
JimPhreak
Are you planning to overclock the CPU? Based on your choice of motherboard I can only assume you are but I feel its not needed. Before I just upgraded to the Xeon D-1540 I had an E3-1245v2 and it handled 6-10 Plex streams at once with no issue. I'd personally go with a non-K CPU (either a Xeon or i7) and a server class motherboard for better reliability and features like IPMI, M.2, etc. Quote Link to comment

HellDiverUK
I've given up with my Maximus VII Gene. It's just not stable enough. I've replaced it with a Gigabyte board which...well, works. I'm actually really annoyed with the Gene, it's supposed to be a premium board. It's clearly just overpriced rubbish. Quote Link to comment

Even more reason to get a board with IPMI. I have this little guy tucked in a corner. Quote Link to comment
demonmaestro
I would say almost a nice build. Everything looks good except the mobo and cpu. I would look into using a Supermicro mobo with IPMI. Mostly so you wont have to plug a screen/keyboard every time you want to tinker with the server. RAM. Never can have enough ram. HDs. Good choice but would go with a WD RE drive for parity. Cant wait to see build pics! Quote Link to comment
