  1. For UK users, there's still Samsung 2TB HD203WI instock here: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2tb-samsung-hd203wi-spinpoint-f3eg-ecogreen-sata-3gb-s-32mb-cache-89-ms-ncq-oem These are on the approved hardware wiki.
  2. Is it possible to under-clock my CPU? (Core 2 Quad) so its not so power hungry? Disable cores? The big watts on idle (http://techgage.com/article/intel_core_2_quad_q9450_266ghz/12) seem high, but what does that equate to in actual £?

    No Parity?

If I only have a single empty drive, can I insert it as the 1st data drive and begin moving files onto it, then add the 2nd data drive? Do I have to add the parity right from the start? Is there any comprehensive instruction for setting this up? I've looked over the unRaid site but can't see anything that answers these questions.

    No Parity?

Can I use the free licence to add 3 data drives, then add the parity drive later when I upgrade the licence? Searched and googled but couldn't find the answer! I want to set up my server and get to know unRaid a little, then add further drives with the Pro licence. Thanks
  5. Daldridge, How do you find the mobo? Only 4 sata ports isn't ideal, do you have a sata pcie card to expand sata ports? I have this same mobo, and am about to start my unraid server build.
  6. Thanks for the comments. Currently I haven't got any setup, but I am going to get the full licence soon. I may start with the free one to see the basics, I just need to get a couple of empty hard drives and finish the build. There's been no comments on the hardware yet, I was expecting "Core 2 Quad 2.66Ghz is 10000x overkill" etc, which I tend to agree, but may prove useful running background tasks. I have read though that its not the best idea running too many background taks, Sabnzbd, Sickbeard etc, as it really isn't designed for this. How true is this? I would add a cache drive, so I'm guessing this is where all downloading, unpacking etc would take place, then the files would be moved onto the correct user share, Movies, TV etc. I'd guess a few people here do this also?
  7. MCS, So you scrape the media before adding to unRaid server, or EMM can scrape media on unRaid server? Thanks
  8. Hi all, I'm a big XBMC user and have exhausted all of the external drives so time to build an unRaid server! I planned on buying basically the UK system as per the wiki, but due to unforeseen circumstances, I now have the following brand new kit ready to use: Coolmaster Centurion 590 case. Intel motherboard DG41TY (Another user, daldridge here is using this mobo http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=5880.0) Atrix Extreme Power 650W (model 650T) power supply. (Not many Sata / Molex connections - I wanted to use Corsair CX 400W) ATI Sapphire HD 3870 graphics card. (Not needed so I will remove and use inbuilt graphics) 2 x Kingston 2Gb Ram 800Mhz DDR2 Ram. Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66Ghz Processor. (Overkill, but it's what I have) Samsung 750Gb (HD753LJ) Hard Drive. (Will likely use as a cache drive) I have a mix of 2TB, 1.5TB and 1TB drives, and intend to purchase 2 x Samsung Spinpoint F3 2TB Ecogreen to start with, 1x Parity 1 x storage, then add my old drives to the array by transferring data over, blanking the drive and adding it to the server. Question: If I have a mix of drive sizes, can I at a later date remove 2 x 1TB drives and replace the data onto a new 2TB drive? I have no experience with unRaid, so any advice on the above would be great. As I said, I have all of the above now, but am open to changing parts if it is beneficial. I will need a sata PCI-e card, any good, cheap options? I need some sata cables, and some molex to sata adapters / or new power supply. Due to the powerful CPU and vast Ram, I'd like to use the machine to run Sabnzbd, Sickbeard, Couchpotato etc, which i appreciate will need some help setting up, and advice on how easy it is to manage the files on the server. Is it possible to use media scrapers such as Ember media manager with media on an unRaid server? XBMC scrapers are ok, but sometimes I like to add my own details, such as trailers etc. Anyway, I look forward to some feedack and critique. Thanks Paul
  9. Rajahal, Thanks for the link. I am in the UK, shipping is about twice the price of the card! Its crazy when I see how much things cost in the US compared to here! You guys have some very good value over there!
  10. Thanks for the responses. I think I may try to add a PCI Sata card, and run say 3 drives, see if it runs fine. The PSU is 300W so I would think this would handle 3/4 drives fine, on the basis the CPU is not doing a lot, and the drives will spin down if not in use...? Jazzysmooth, In your explanation, will I need to add a blank parity drive and a blank data drive, then start moving the files? In that case I will need 2 new blank drives. Correct? I do aim to build a sexy purpose built server when funds allow, this could/will be my test server. Thanks
  11. Hi, My first post here Great work with unRaid, I hear nothing but good things! I've known about unRaid for some time but have not used it yet. I have half a dozen SATA drives, totalling around 5TB. Most of these are USB external drives. I want to take them out of their cases and insert them into a tower. My budget right now is pretty low, but I have recently acquired a Dell GX260 mini tower for free. Spec here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx260/en/ug/specs.htm#1110653 (P4 2.53Ghz, 512Mb Ram, CD, Floppy) It is quite old, but I want to know if this could be used to store 4-5 drives for now, until I can build a purpose built media server. Plugging, unplugging, moving the external drives is tiresome and annoying finding certain films etc when they are spread around! I've never built a PC / server, but pick things up quickly. Can i remove the CD, floppy etc and slide 3.5" drives into their place, or will I need to modify things? The board has IDE connections, but has 4 PCI slots, could I add a SATA card and add the drives? Any suggestions? I want to make an unRaid server, can I add 'full' drives or do they need to be empty when you add them? Any advice welcome. Thanks
