  1. I have been happily running unraid for many years. My server was running Vs 5.0.6. I recently decided to build a completely new server as the old one was running out of space and slots and anyway some of the disks are 5 years old now. It has all new everything including 4 x10 tb seagate drives, thus achieving in 4 slots what my old server could do with 10 slots. It is running unraid vs 6.3.1 I have just finished copying everything from the old to the new server via windows and was hitting speeds of 60-70 Mb/s. The old server never got much above 40Mb/s and was mainly 25-30 Mb/s. Pretty happy so far. However I just copied a big file from my PC to the new server and hit speeds over 100 Mb/s per second. Can this be right. This seems impossibly fast given it has to write parity as well. I have no cache drive. Parity is showing green and everything appears normal but those speeds are freaking me out a bit. Is this normal these days?
  2. I fixed this in the end by copying bzimage and bzroot from the backup to the flash drive (overwriting the existing files).
  3. Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it but no luck, still get the same error. Do you think it is caused by an error on the flash drive? I do have a full backup of it if needed.
  4. I have not turned off my unraid server off for many months but had to today due to a power outage. When the power came back I turned it on but get error messages during the booting process. It is version 5. Things appear to go wrong when " Cannot open root device "(null)" . . . . appears on the screen. The attached photo shows the messages before and after the cannot open message appears. After the last message everything just stops. I am not very technical but have used unraid trouble free for many years. Please help!
  5. I've had this problem for a while. Have tried several things listed below but no luck so far. The Problem: Very slow write speeds. They vary from 35 mb a second (lovely) to 128 kb a second (horrible). While writing a file it will start at the high speed but quickly deteriorate to the slowest speeds. In windows 7 the bar at the top of the explorer window will be constantly refreshing (green line moving across the bar at the top of the window). Reading is fine and fast, every time. What I've tried from earlier suggestions - Upgraded to the latest bios for my motherboard. Installed a separate network adapter so I now have two, the motherboard one and an add on card. Both have the same problem. I'd really appreciate and answer to this as it is driving me nuts! Syslog attached. Thanks for any help. Peter syslog-2012-12-25.txt
  6. Just a thought. I recently changed the parity drive from a 2 tb wd ears to a 3 tb wd ears. The new drive is not jumpered but all the other disks are. Could this be a problem?
  7. I can not write to my unraid server. When I try to write a file it starts ok and then gets slower and slower and eventually either aborts or gets so slow it would take hours to copy a small file. I have tried changing network cables, updating the bios and disconnecting another unraid server I have on the network with no joy. In the syslog there are acpi errors . . . 8. Thanks for the suggestions. I tried that but it hasn't helped except I am no longer getting error messages in the sys log. However write speeds are 200 - 600k (yes k). Read speeds are normal. Huh, just as I was typing that a copy I had running aborted and the same errors are back in the syslog. Any other ideas? I've attached a new syslog with the updated bios. syslog-2012-10-31.txt

  12. I recently upgraded to RC8 I've just replaced my parity drive upgrading from 2 to 3 tb. Started building the new sync yesterday and was getting speeds of 35MB. I used to get 65MB on 4.7. It's still running some 26 hours later and has slowed to 23 MB and showing 343 minutes to run, 84% complete. My system has 10 data drives all 2tb wd green. The new parity is a 3tb western green. All data drives have spun down now as there is no data after 2 TB. This does seem incredibly slow.
  13. Thanks for the replies. Tried the mods suggested by Joe L but they did not help. Then I tried booting with a V5 release as suggested and it worked. That left me in a bit of a dilemma with a new motherboard to configure and an update to V5 at the same time. Not for the feint hearted. As I had all my data backed up anyway, I decided to go for it. Amazingly the update sorted out all my drive placements correctly and everything worked great on first start up. The old motherboard had been causing all sorts of problems but I was reluctant to change it with all the potential problems I envisaged that might cause. Well I need not have worried. Turned out to be so easy. I have done this before with a windows machine and what a major hassle that was. Thumbs up once again for UNRAID.
  14. Had to install a new motherboard on my unraid 4.7 machine. Boots OK but no network access. ifconfig shows only local loopback. The machine boots fine into Ubuntu and the network works fine in ubuntu. I've seen this before but long ago and can't remember how to fix it. Have attached the network.cfg and system log. The network.cfg is the same as the old mother board. I've had to truncate the log file as it is full of errors about wrong disk assignments and therefore to big to upload. Hope I truncated the right bits. Any help much appreciated network.cfg syslog-20121005-015642.txt
