  1. In the abundance of caution, when (if ever) should one think about replacing a hard drive to avoid failure? Should one look at read / writes that are listed on the reported on the Main page of the Tower Home page, age, or something else? Thanks Lewis

I have been using UNRAID for 5+ years now, i have never had a problem - now all of the sudden I am having major issues I have not added anything or changed any settings All of sudden I am unable to move files from my computer to my UNRAID - it begins transferring, then it says it lost connection I noticed recently when wacthing movies it will freeze or lock up I am now suddenly not able to access //Tower or via the web address I can still see the data and drives on my network and the data in the drives I am a newbe and get lost beyond basic stuff I will buy you a beer if you can help - i have spend all day today rebooting, updating the UNRAID firmware, etc and i have not been able to fix the problem I am using windows 7 Thanks for your help Lewis
  7. Your build looks good - the RAM might be overkill The biggest tweak I wish i would have focused on when i was building my server was the noise. THe fans for my 9 drives were way too loud and I have spent the past several weeks trying different set ups I eventually went with PWM fans and so far it has made a HUGE difference just my 2 cents - good luck

Guys - Just wanted to give everyone an update and say thanks I have been running the unraid server now for over a week and everything has been very smooth I have checked parity a few times just to be safe and it works great The server gets recognized instantly by all my computers and data backup-exchange has been effortless. I am a bit unhappy with my fan selection - i started with these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835220027 but they would not kick up in speed and my drives were running at up to 48 degrees or so, so then i switched to these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103024 these fans keep the drives easily in the 30's but are noticably louder - so i am looking for new ones Ideally i will eventually figure out how to have the fans turn on only when the drives they are cooling are running (I have case fan and a killer CPU fan so the drive fans only really need to run when the drives are.) This fan stuff to me is just tweaking which is fun - the ease by which I was able to get my unraid server up and running was night-and-day vs my attempt two years ago - i am so glad i tried again Thanks to all the guys - especially bjb999, I would never have gotton here without your help I will be busy over the next year filling up my unused 3TB of space THANKS AGAIN Lewis

I did some more reading in these forums and folks have had problems with transfer speeds switched cables So I switched to all new cables and guess what - transfer speed jumped up to 20mps - so it is now showing about a 1 day left to transfer vs. the previous 8 days - HUGE So i should be wrapped up Thursday I still need to set a Parity drive and a Cache drive.   10. Man - you guys are all over this, this is incredibly impressive. So i ran some tests tonight, it is definitely the NAS that i am pulling it from which is the problem NOT the Lime Server. I am running a Promise Smartstor ns4300 - I tried coping files to my computer from the NS4300 and it was just as slow - not sure, but i have the NS4300 on a RAID 5, so that may be the problem. I then tried coping a file from my computer to the Lime Server and it was a lot faster. Thanks again for the quick observations, will just have to live with it till its done on Sunday.

Update So i began transferring my data from my NAS to my Lime Server Sunday night I have it running through a gig switch and it takes about 30 minutes to transfer 4.5 gigs It will take about 11 days to transfer the entire 2.5 TB from my current NAS I had a big scare last night; I stopped the transfer because i realized i had set the Split Level to "0" rather than "1" (I have set up the sub-directories as "Movies" and "Music" and Documents" and "Photos" etc). So using a Split Level "1" it will keep, for instance, the contents in the "Aliens" file under "Movies" all in one disc, but will allow the Movies files (such as Aliens, Star Wars, etc) to spread over different discs). - To be honest, and i know other folks have said something simular, the Split Level is a bit confusing. Anyway, I had to reboot the server to reset the split levels and when the array came back up it did not recognize any of the disks (i.e. it was like starting over). At first i paniced, then i did a search and saw that other folks had this same problem and when they reboot again it works - THANKFULLY, i rebooted twice and they came back Anyway - so far, so good. I will be sure to update when i finish transferring the data. As an FYI, I have not set up a parity drive or a Cache drive yet. I am going to transfer all the data over and then set those up - a Great idea from bjb999

We are up and running - thx so much :) :) :) The difference was i moved the USB drive to the back as you recommended and all of the sudden the BIOS reconized it What is wierd is in the photos of the computers made by lime they show the USB drive in a slot inside the computer on the mother board Oh - well - it now works Thanks for ALL YOUR HELP running the disk check tonight and will start data transfer tommorrow THANKS AGAIN Lewis

Well, so far-so-good untill i hit a snag on the BIOS The build went well I have booted (without the flash drive) and the system reconizes my hard drives, and all is well I have downloaded the syslunix and the "Basic" version of UNRAID and unzipped it onto my flash in order to get the GUID (i am using a Sony Micro Vault - the one recommended. Now i have put my flash drive inside in my UNRAID computer in the flash drive slot on the motherboard - as shown in the picture on LIME's front page, and the only two items the BIOS is letting me boot to is a "Floppy" and a one of the hard drives - does anyone have thier BIOS setting for this board to boot to the flash? By the way - thanks again for the tip on how to disable the BIOS on the Adaptec 1430SA - BRYANTD - great tip, would never have gotton this. bjp999 - as soon as i figure out how to boot i am going to do the steps as you recommended earlier. I have left one drive (a 1TB drive) unplugged - this will be my parity drive once i transfer over all my data. Oh - one other thing, in response to bjp999's question on having more than one hard disk I have 8 disks in total - 4 Western Digital 1.0tb, and 4 Seagate 750gig The price i quoted in my first post of $906.45 fopr my build included the purchase of 4 WD 1.0tb disks; the price DOES NOT include the four Seagate drives. I had the 4 Seagate 750gig drives from my first attempt at the UNRAID build back in 2007 (i paid $1k for the four 750gig drives back in '07 - man have the prices of drives come down) So in total i will have 8 drives - i will use one of the WD 1.0tb as the parity drive and the remaining 7 drives (in total 6.0 tb) will be data This will more than double the amount of space i have now - at a fraction of the cost of the NAS i am currently using

Guys - this is awesome, bjp999 - thank you for the detailed instructions - particularly the idea to not assign parity until i copy over all my data; this is HUGE - i am transferring about 2.5TB of backed up data (photo's, home movies, backed up movies, etc) - not configuring the array will allow it to copy much faster i would imagine. First i will transfer all the data to all the drives other the than the parity drive, then i will create parity - Awesome NAS - Thanks for the feedback BryantD - Thanks for the detail on the Adaptec 1430SA - i was worried specifically how to handle that one - so thanks for the good detail This weekend it the big day - i am excited By the way i would recommend my build for folks who want a very quite build. I have used these exact fans on my HTPC and it sits in the living room and we can not hear it at all. The fans have heat sensors on them so they turn more quickly only when they need to.
