U-Nas NSC-800 - Building First Unraid Server

I already have the case in hand. I'm committed to using this case for the build which is the U-NAS NSC-800 Server Chassis. Need some help with the other parts such as the Power Supply which needs to be a 1U one. I plan on using this unraid server mostly for streaming content, but might also use Plex in the future.

CPU: Intel Ivy Bridge Core i3-3220T Dual-Core Processor 2.8 Ghz 3MB Cache LGA 1155 35W

Motherboard:  ASUS P8H77-I Mini ITX Intel Motherboard

Memory: Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Case: U-NAS NSC-800 Server Chassis http://www.u-nas.com/xcart/product.php?productid=17617

Power Supply: Seasonic SS-500L1U http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151129

There have been a few posts lately about the Atom. The mobo in your link is uses the Atom 510 chip and you might be better off going with the Atom 525 which I think has a bit more power....maybe checking it on PassMark will give you some ideas of the differences.

I have read on this forum Plex (and transcoding) on the Atom is not a good idea. It's better to move up to Sandy/Ivy Bridge for it.

Search for DirtySanchez's Landfill system.

Thanks found the thread will use the CPU/RAM/Motherboard he has listed

Any suggestions on 1U power supplies that will work with this Motherboard?

Thanks!

I haven't had any experience with buying/spec-ing a 1U power supply, BUT I did stumble across JonnyGURU.com's power supply reviews....which are pretty through with tear-downs.

Here's their review of Seasonic  SS-400H1U from 2009:http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=131 which seems to be really a single rail supply!

Delta DPS-500YB: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=312

Seasonic SS-500L1U: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=276...oops, maybe a little too pricey! (edit: no it's not too bad; search error on my part)

It seems weird that U-NAS doesn't offer a power supply options. For the number of drives your planning on using you might want to search around for an online power supply calculator and size the PS accordingly.

Needless to say most 1U supplies are noisy. Good Luck!

Thanks I pretty sure I am going to go with the Seasonic SS-500L1U. Newegg has it for $99.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151129

Going to need a SATA expansion card right?

Yes, if you're going to fully populate it from the get-go the mobo is two ports shy. There's a thread on controllers at:

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=12404.0

I've read elsewhere you should be OK with "just about any 2-port controller" but I think you'd want to consider whether or not you want to go for a SATA III over a SATA II board on the basis you may need it down the road. It always safer to go with a tried-and-true component.

However, you may just want to build out what you need now and see if you really need all that many drives. With 3 and 4TB drives available you can get a lot stored. You can add drives as you need them later and take advantage of the latest HDD areal densities! That's a great feature of unRAID!!

AwesomeD, did you have any problems fitting the Seasonic in the case? If not, how quiet/loud is that PSU?

Okay, I'll be the 3rd person in a row to ask -- how quiet is the Seasonic?  :)

Seasonic's are known for their very quiet thermally controlled fans, but 1U units clearly have to use much smaller (thus noisier) fans than their ATX cousins.    Seasonic still claims this unit uses "super low noise" fans ... but that's clearly a marketing term, so it'd be nice to know how it sounds to an actual user.

It IS a good supply (as I'd expect) ... clearly meets/exceeds the certification levels for its 80+ Gold rating [Here's the actual cert:  http://www.plugloadsolutions.com/psu_reports/SEASONIC_SS-500L1U_ECOS%202774_500W_Report.pdf ]

Does 80 PLUS Certified have anything to do with Noise level check as well?

In that PDF, mention nothing about silence/noise.

There's no noise level specification in the 80+ certification.  It is, however, true that a more efficient power supply will draw less power from the mains ... thus have less heat to dissipate ... and should therefore require less air movement to exhaust the excess heat.    In a well-designed system, this means the fans can spin at lower speeds -- and will thus reduce the noise.

But as 3 of us have now asked, it'd be nice if AwesomeD would comment on the noise level  :)
