With changing the controller type in Global SMART settings to SAT, do the drives show up properly with ata-model-serialnum (instead of scsi-1234556890) for the disk naming? I also have one of the DS4486 shelves and don't use it because I couldnt get smart data and also disk naming made things more complicated because you had to make sure you knew where disks were being moved to (I think, I might be wrong on this part).

I just tested my container on unRaid, then forced upgrade, and then pulled the container on my workstation and can't reproduce the issue. Have you tried removing the container and re-adding? As long as you don't delete the apps folder for the container, your data won't be lost.

I know people are fans of this, but why not install VMWare ESXi on the bare metal, pass through a HBA to a VM running unRaid. Then you have all kinds of options. You could setup a pfSense firewall and put unRaid on a vSwitch not accessible to the public and an OpenVPN VM (or on pfSense as a plugin) as well. Then just VPN in to your virtual network. Have your IPMI and ESXi setup on your Colo's management subnet so you can control both when needed to get ESXi up and running. Install ESXUI for remote ESXi management so no need for bloated windows client or vCenter. Everything is secure at that point. Complicated to setup initially, but all free, less time and an unRaid license.

Anyone running any of the betas as a VM on ESXi? I know it's not officially supported, but that's how I have my all-in-one box setup. 6.1.9 has been great, but looking to upgrade to 6.2 (or 6.2 beta before RC/GA is ready).

I have no idea what the last 2 posters are doing, but unRAID is a guest VM on my ESXi. I don't think anyone in their right mind would do the reverse.

I love unRAID, but it's not a full blown hypervisor. Sometimes, unRAID gets cranky and unresponsive. I need OpenVPN to be up. I need pfSense to be up. ESXi does that and does it well. unRAID does NAS, HTPC and bells and whistles well (docker containers for many useful things, that are not mission critical for home), so that's what I use unRAID for.

This is not going to happen anytime soon, if ever. It interferes with features we have planned for the future. "Array Start/Stop" is really a misnomer. In this context "array" refers to the entire set of devices attached to the server, not just the ones that are assigned to the parity-protected devices. So do you have a solution in mind for those who wish to host a pfsense or other end point firewall appliance as a VM on unraid? What is the issue exactly? Well for me if I want to upgrade disks in the array from reiserfs and still run the VM (Windows in this case) I have to continually start and stop the VM as I start and stop the array to change the file system type. Since my Windows VM is recording from TV tuners I have to wait for windows in the recording schedule before I can do that so it took a month and a half to convert to xfs. My Windows VM has its own passed through controller for recording drives but the boot drive has to be an image (as far as I know) so I have to start and stop the VM with the array. I can see other things like this in the future where it would be nicer to have an external drive for the VM that doesn't cause problems like putting the array in to maintenance mode to trouble shoot drive problems - do disk checks without having to shut down the VM. That's exactly why you would use something like ESXi/Proxmox/KVM/etc on a different machine or virtualize unRaid and keep unRaid's container use to Dockers and not VMs. IMO, unRaid should be limited to media (tv, movies, etc) and backups. Anything else like PVR, Security Cameras, Routers, that need to have solid uptime should be on a solid platform. unRaid is a NAS that has recently grown into a services device. Until they provide the means for better uptime (not of just the OS, but also the array), unRaid does not fit that bill. This is no different than someone trying to install DD-WRT on their Linksys WRT54g and asking it to do packet analysis, ntop, QoS all while on a 100mbps+ download stream; that hardware just isn't meant for all that. Use unRaid for what it is meant for and stop jamming everything into an all-on-one machine. It's all-in-one for media and backups, not critical services. edit: furthermore, unRaid does not support VLAN tagging OR officially support multiple nics outside of bonding. Until it does that, it is NOT a candidate for something like a router that requires at least 2 nics. edit2: It's late and I didn't think of pci passthrough for a dual port nic, but even still, unRaid is not the type of hypervisor that other virtualization platforms are. I love unRaid, I have a ton of docker containers for a bunch of things, but a router VM would never be considered.

There's no reason I should have to change that now, and I'm not going to reconfigure it on the firewall every time it stops working. It should work like it's been working I get that, and this is an assumption, but if you have a router that supports iptables, you could easily setup a firewall rule to allow outgoing from unraid's ip to limetech's key server ip. I still don't think it should be calling home at all, but I get it, they are trying to protect themselves against pirates and that's hard to do these days. but how do i connect to the internet? if i use Pfsense on Unraid as a VM? i have to have Unraid let me run the VM first before it can connect to the internet. I think you are among a very small amount of users that do this with unraid as the vm host... most people use ESXI or Proxmox for that. Unraid doesn't even officially support multiple ip addresses on a single card without having to run a command in the boot script.

Is this a one-time validation OR is this new version crippled unless it phones home at EVERY reboot???? HOPEFULLY this only will apply to the beta and evaluation versions. Either there is a keygen out there or they are trying to prevent a keygen from being made considering they are gaining speed with new customers. However, if this isn't implemented properly and unraid wont start (starting the array/services I assume), then that is a huge dealbreaker. I will use OMV or a combination of something else. Unraid is nice, pretty and makes things easy, but I won't let a bad thunderstorm that causes my UPS to shut my servers down that might also screw my internet up at the same time (it happens.. more than once) hold my data hostage. edit: I work for a fairly well known company that has millions of installations of our flagship software. We also implemented a key server. But the software is a bit relaxed if it has already authenticated before. If it has, then it gives an additional period of time of purchased features before it get's mad that it can't contact home. This would be an acceptable solution. Also, what happens if their key server goes down? Ours has, both by our mistake and our hosting having issues. I hope they thought this through.

Because Plex is insane with its file cache, I was going to do a tar -zcf instead of rsync. Rsync takes a bit of time since there is, what seems, like 10k files.

I am running 6b6. I found my issue. I was sharing an unraid share that contained my sickrage config directory. I wanted my configs to be persistant, even if my cache drive dies, since docker containers can just be re-deployed easily. Looks like I'll have to find another way to do backups of my configs for sickrage/plexmediaserver/etc. Oddly, plex media server wasn't having the same issues, but I noticed sluggishness, which might have been caused from unraid trying to spin up drives. I ended up talking with the maintainer of sickrage and walking thru code to figure out the issue... over a simple user error. Bah!

I installed a fresh copy of sickrage tonight and I am unable to duplicate the issue... I do not know why this is not working for you. What version of unraid are you running? I am running 6b6. Perhaps the latest unraid kernel is somehow the issue? edit: oops, replied in the quote needo, not sure if you saw this, just wondering what version of unraid you are running on. Thanks.
