kitono
Looking to build this with all new parts except for the power supply: http://pcpartpicker.com/user/jsoltani/saved/g3Mypg I'd like to use it for unraid + plex at the minimum but would really like to have it all running on some kind of hypervisor like esxi to also be able to have a windows 7 or server running and whatever other vms (osx maybe?) I'd like to also use ipmi... I don't know if this motherboard supports it? Is this the right hardware for what I'm looking to do? I'm a newbie for all intensive purposes and know nothing when it comes to linux/dos commands really. So I planned to try to youtube learn it all from example... For file storage I planned on going big with 6tb drives starting with 1 6tb parity, 1 6tb storage, 1 ssd to house the vms, 1 ssd for cache. I'd like to eventually fill up to max unraid can support (22 drives x 6 tb = 132 tb? 126 usable?) Could really use feedback here. Quote Link to comment

tritron
Did you think about using cheaper case ? I am sure you can get case that holds as many drives for 100$ and have more money to spend on hard drives Quote Link to comment
kitono
Wow really? I didn't know there was a cheaper solution. Will it include the backplanes for all 24 drives w/ hotswap? Quote Link to comment
switchman
Did you think about using cheaper case ? I am sure you can get case that holds as many drives for 100$ and have more money to spend on hard drives If you can point out a case with 24 plugable drive cages for less, I would be interested also. I have not been able to find one for less than the Norco cages. Quote Link to comment
switchman
@kitono You might also want to pick up one of these plus some 120 mm high static pressure fans that are quieter than the stock fans in the case. http://www.ipcdirect.net/servlet/Detail?no=258 Also, you may want to pick up extra screws for the drive caddies. My SS-500s were short the number of screws required and they are very cheap metal. The length is also an issue as they are very short. http://www.ipcdirect.net/servlet/Detail?no=211 Also, that raidmax PS is 3 rails @34A each. You want a single rail supply. If you want a Gold 850 watt moduler supply, this might be a good option http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151102 http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Seasonic-X-Series-850-W-Power-Supply-Review/1169/1 Quote Link to comment
kitono
Switchman I figured I could balance the load across the three rails. e.g. there are 6 trays I would plug in 2 trays per rail. I did the math and it sounds like the psu can do it... what do you think? Quote Link to comment
switchman
I would not do it. There is more to it than just current. Go with a lower quality, ie bronze or silver rated to get the price equal. You could back away from the modular cables, even though I think they are great. If your that tight for money, dump the SSD and pick up a very cheap 1TB drive for the cache. Use the difference to purchase the better power supply. Your seriously talking about investing potentially several thousand dollars in hardware and your going to scrimp on on a core piece of the hardware and go against every recommendation on this board of single vs multi-rail. By the way do they post a schematic so you know which connectors are tied to which rail so you can hook it up correctly? You probably will get away with it when the system is lightly loaded, but as it fills up, I would expect problems. Quote Link to comment
kitono
Alright, I'll start looking into a new PSU w/ single rail and enough to cover 24 drives. Quote Link to comment
switchman
Seriously, for now dump the SSD and replace it with a 1TB WD Black for $70. Take the difference and get the Seasonic I posted earlier. There is nothing wrong with spinning drives for the cache. With Unraid v6 you could even run two drives. Later if you want, you could always pick up a SSD. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236625 Quote Link to comment
kitono
Alright I'd like to keep the SSD but I replaced the power supply. I think this is the final build. Just need to find a good mounting solution for the 25th drive (cache ssd) as the other ssd will be hosting the VMs on the 24th bay. Please take a look and let me know what you think of the build http://pcpartpicker.com/user/jsoltani/saved/g3Mypg Quote Link to comment
switchman
The PS looks good. The over all build looks good. How are you going to be using the RES2SV240NC? Does it require sub controllers or can it support up to 24 itself?, Some else would need to comment on your controller mixture. Quote Link to comment
Riverhawk
Looking to put this exact build together. Any final comments on missing parts(from kitono's last part list)? I'm not too keen on how/where these connectors/cables come into play. This build is similar to "atlas"...think I can just follow that build's lead? Quote Link to comment

kitono
switchman that card is an extender so it requires the flashed m1015 card but between the two cards together then it supports 24 connections. Riverhawk you're gonna plug in mini-sas cables from the case to the two cards and from one card to the extender card. I eventually decided against going with this build because the total dollar amount was too high for me. Hanging out in the chat channel and learning that I could have an all-in-one gaming rig/htpc server/unraid file storage server means that this will be my new goal going forward. My current gaming PC has a very good PSU and case and plenty of bay drive slots so I can save money by using those. Quote Link to comment
kciaccio
Dump those Green WD drives...they are not for using in a raid situation. I had three in my array and had to change them out because they started to fail in SMART very early. Switch to WD reds. They are designed for UNRAID. Personally I would avoid WD drives all together but it's up to you. I have had great success with these but they are 4tb.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145912 Quote Link to comment
