  1. Currently, when you replace a drive (eg to upgrade the drive capacity) your array is unprotected whilst the new drive is rebuilt. Would it be possible to add the ability to replace a drive without the loss of protection during the process? In my mind it could work something like: [*]Insert new (precleared) drive [*]Assign drive to already occupied slot [*]Without unassigning the existing drive, UnRaid proceeds to 'rebuild' the drive data onto the new drive (effectively cloning the existing drive) [*]Once the 'rebuild' is complete, the old drive can be unassigned from that slot (this could even happen automatically) The key point here is that during the 'rebuild' step, both drives are present and if any disk errors occur then the array stays protected. I know that you can 'simply' put the old drive back in if there's a problem, but this should make the process less risky I think.
  2. Ok, I'll raise this as a separate feature request then. Thanks for the clarification :-)
  3. My understanding is that to replace a drive you remove the old one and insert the new one and allow unraid to rebuild it from the parity calculations. Please let me know if this isn't the correct way of doing it currently because I'm about to do it and I don't want to make mistakes! :-) If my understanding above is correct (and from your comment 'the array is actually unprotected' I assume it is) then I think what I'm looking for is a way to do it without leaving the array unprotected during the process. Not being familiar with the internals on unRaid I have no idea if this would add a significant amount of complexity over and above what is already planned for this feature (removing a drive) and so I asked if it would be possible to include it. I know that it is not an essential feature (or else it would be in already), but being able to upgrade drives without leaving the array unprotected for a period of time would be a big plus for users such as myself who are less skilled/confident in such matters.
  4. Would this also include the ability to replace a drive without having to rebuild parity? For example, if I want to replace an existing drive with a bigger drive (including the parity drive) it would be great if we could just add the new drive and tell unRaid that it was to replace an existing drive. UnRaid could then clone the existing drive over to the new drive (whilst not destroying parity) and once complete, automatically remove the old drive from the array. The key thing here is that while the clone operation takes place, any parity calculations include the clone pair as a single drive rather than as two separate drives. Hopefully the above makes sense. If this isn't included in this feature, please can you move this post to a new feature request?
  5. Hi all, I've been running unRaid for a little while with a couple of 500GB disks I had kicking around. Now reached the point where I need to add more space. I've bought a couple of 3TB disks, which should keep me going for a little while longer. Obviously, one of these needs to replace the parity, so I'm a little nervous about doing that. I've been searching the forums and I think I have all the info I need, I just want to check I'm following the most up to date info and not missing something. These are the steps I'm expecting to follow: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=33277.msg306300#msg306300 Is this the best/ most up to date? I'm on 5.0.5 if that makes a difference. For the pre-clear steps, is there a way of triggering this from the Web page? I see here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=26121.0 that it was briefly added to the SimpleFeatures plugin. Is there any current way of doing this, or do I have to telnet in every time as described here http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Configuration_Tutorial#Preclearing_With_Screen?
  6. Tontonfranz - did you find a solution to this? I have the same issue: iTunes on my PC can see iTunes on my unRaid tower, but on my iPod I can only see my shared library on my PC, not the shared library on the server. Any ideas?
  7. Hi NAS, thanks for your reply. While I undertand and agree with your points, I also agree with Helmonder that lime-tech should focus on the basic core functionality. If this was an open-source project then I would 100% agree with you, this sort of thing should be part of the main project. Of course this isn't open source and (correct me if I'm wrong here) I understand there is only one person working on it. Given the very limited development resource and the already delayed release schedule, I would suggest that trying to push more work his way is not the way to go. At the moment there are only two areas of functionality: 1- lime-tech developed and supported official stuff, and 2- User developed and supported plug-ins. I think we all agree that important stuff is easily lost in the user forums. What I'm suggesting is an in-between solution that identifes the best-of-class user plugins and bundles them up with the main download. The key bit is that the dev & support of these plugins remains in the unraid community, not with lime-tech. This meets the goals of getting these tools out to novice users and avoids the problems of placing additional work on lime-tech.
  8. Can I make an alternative suggestion? I'm currently putting together my first server and so I'm commenting as a new & inexperienced user. I have personally found the large number of available plugins quite bewildering. I know they're all there in the User Customizations board, but coming at that for the first time is quite overwhelming. I can see there are some popular ones (Simple Features, unMenu, SNAP) but I'm struggling to understand what they all do and if I should choose one or can I run them together. (Don't answer that here or else we'll go off topic!) What would be useful for newcomers would be if there was an official plugin selection that should contain all the normal useful stuff, whatever that may be. This could then be bundled with the official download, or made available alongside it. However, I think this should be a community led project, not a lime-tech one. That way lime-tech would be freed up to work on the core functionality and the UI and the useability tools would be developed and supported by the community. I don't think this is significantly different to what we have at the moment. I'm sure the experienced people here would be able to suggest a selection of existing plugins that could be taken as a starting point. You then just need a team of people of oversee it. Development of plugins would carry on as it is, but a plugin would only get added to the official set once it has been firmly established in the community. I think this would meet both goals - newcomers can get a standard set of valuable add-ons and lime-tech can concetrate on core functionality.
  9. Updated shopping list. The EBuyer bundle deal works out a bit cheaper, plus it also includes a cooler which is something I was unsure about. It then makes sense to get everything from EBuyer instead of Dabs, especially as they do free delivery. Changed my mind on the case. Now looking at the Fractal Design Core 3000. The rubber mounts for the HDDs and the sideways trays look like a good idea. Has anyone got any experience with this case? I am going to go with the IDE card as suggested. I also looked at the Xenta SATA to IDE Dongle, but I think this just plugs directly into the rear of the IDE HDD to convert it to SATA and I'm not sure about that as a solution. This would also raise questions about fitting it in with the sideways HDD trays. Anyone used these before? I've also added a USB header cable so I can mount the USB flash drive internally. Hmm, that reminds me - I must check that the flash drive I have laying around is ok... So, shopping list is now: Motherboard: Asus M5A78L-M LX V2 CPU: 2.8 GHz AMD Sempron 145 (SDX145HBK13GM) Memory: Patriot Signature 4GB DDR3 (PSD34G13332) Cooler: Processor Cooler for AMD Sempron Bundle Deal: £75.99 Power Supply: Corsair 430 Watt CX430 V2 (CMPSU-430CXV2UK), £36.14 Case: Fractal Design Core 3000 (FD-CA-CORE-3000-BL), £50.92 Add-in Card: Startech 1 Port PCI-Express IDE Adapter Card Storage controller IDE 133 MBps PCI Express x1, £16.68 USB Cable: Startech USB A Female to USB Motherboard 4 Pin Header cable (USBMBADAPT), £1.74 Total cost before drives: £181.47 Before I click on the checkout button, is there anything anyone would tweak with that build?
  10. Good point about the memory. Now looking at a bundle deal with 4GB that I saw on this thread. No, I don't have my RPi yet. I've not even managed to place an order - I'm still at "Thank you for registering your interest" :'(
  11. Thanks tboggie, The 'cooler' that comes in the bundle - is that just a heatsink or does it have a fan too? (This is the first time I've attempted a system build and I'm unsure on some of the basics.) I was comparing this bundle to buying them seperately (see this thread) and wasn't sure if the cooler was part of the bundle or came as standard with the CPU.
  12. Sorry, I can't help answer your question, but I'm also looking at this bundle. It looks like it only comes with 1 4GB memory stick. Is this right? I thought memory sticks were supposed to go in pairs?
  13. After lurking for a while, I'm going to jump in and build my first unRaid server. I'm going to base it on the UK Budget Box but with some changes because some of the recommended components aren't available. I wanted to run the build past you experts to see if you had any helpful comments for a noob... The primary use for the box will be to hold MP3s which I can then stream across my home network (hopefully to a Raspberry Pi running Raspbmc). Secondary use would be for networked file storage. Initial storage requirements are very low (<100GB) but I'm sure that will ramp up soon enough. I'm not expecting to put any video on it any time soon though. Want to start with just 2 drives (data+parity) but would want to be able to go up to 6 drives with minimal fuss. I want to keep set-up costs low, while allowing for possible later expansion. I expect this to be always-on, so I also want to keep running costs down and it does need to be quiet. It will be in the same room as the TV so I don't want the fans active when they don't need to be. Motherboard: Couldn't find the recommended Biostar TA785GE or Asus M4A78L-M. Dabs have the Asus M5A78L-M pretty cheap. There's three versions, M5A78L-M LX, M5A78L-M LX V2 and M5A78L-M/USB3. Other than support for more memory and faster USB, I don't think there's any difference so will go with the cheaper £36 LX model. They all use the Realtek RTL8111E network controller, but I understand this is ok with v5.0? CPU: 2.8 GHz AMD Sempron 145 (SDX145HBGMBOX), £29. Memory: 2 x Kingston ValueRAM 1GB DDR3 1333MHz / PC3-10600 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM (KVR1333D3N9/1G), £12 Power Supply: Corsair 430 Watt CX430 V2 (CMPSU-430CXV2UK), £35 Case: Antec Three Hundred (0761345-08300-3), £45 Total cost before drives: £157 Drives: I have a couple of Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB (ST3500630A) drives that I was hoping to use initially. These are UATA/IDE drives and I have now realised that the M5A78L-M doesn't have IDE ports. So I have three options (a) bite the bullett and buy new SATA drives straight away (£200-£250), (b) use a add-on card like the StarTech.com 1 Port PCIe IDE Adapter Card (PEX2IDE) (£17), © Pick a different motherboard that supports IDE natively (£??). Any thoughts on this? Cooling: Ok, total noob question: Do I need anything else for cooling? I've never built a system before so I don't know what's needed. Does the processor come with the required heatsink etc or do I need to get that separately? Thanks in advance for any advice...
