Disabled Disk - Smart looks ok?

Recommended Posts

OK I admit it, I was messing around with my array... Trying to clean up some things (like old share/files for slimserver pkg), and unraid looks locked up and I did a hard-shut down...

I powered back up and one of my disks is disabled, when I ran smartctl on it, looks ok? (don't really know how to read it).

Not really sure how to correct this, so I am copying data off the disk right now (I know its using parity data) to other disks.  I have plenty of space, but wasn't sure how to remove the disk and let unraid to its thing automatically, most people replace the disk which I may do but what to get protection up and running first since I have the space.

Currently my plan is to remove data from the disk... remove the disk from the array (though this looks old:http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Shrink_array).  Then possibly re-add it after I upgrade to beta 16 (on b6 right now).

Any thoughts tips etc?

  • 2 years later...

So here's the issue(s).

Bad disk. Couldn't even SMART it. Array offline for several weeks while I finally got time to work on it.

Replaced bad disk.

Booted up array, and like the FAQ says...I unassigned the bad disk. Then went in and added the new disk to Slot 5. Upon starting the array, it was rebuilding the drive, just like it's supposed to.

Then, I had a power failure that powered off my UNRAID box.

From then on, the configuration is valid but the disk is disabled. I'm confident that the data did NOT get back on there.

So, I decided to pre-clear the drive once more and try again. Unfortunately there isn't an option to re-build the drive a second time.

I do not have a syslog from before or during most of this drama, but I do have some from the pre-clear to now.

Syslog is attached.

SMART of the new "disabled" disk:

To make unRAID rebuild a disk that is not disabled:

Stop the array.

Unassign the disk you want to rebuild.

Start the array without the disk. This will make unRAID see the disk is missing.

Stop the array.

Reassign the disk.

Start the array.

unRAID will rebuild the disk onto the "new" disk you assigned to that slot.

So it looks like my USB drive also had some errors on it thus preventing the above method from working as it was mounted as read-only.

I've rectified that issue, and unassigned, started, stopped, reassigned, and restarted again. Data rebuild is currently at 0.4%. Hopefully this will complete today.

Thank you @trurl.
