Loosing connection to Unraid after serveral Minutes. [Solved]

Unraid 4.5.6

I try to tell you the hole timeline:

 

My problem is that yesterday may unRaid crashed. After reboot it checked Parity. Ok should be.

Today it's done i looked into the Web interface and all looks fine.

 

But when i tried to access the SMB  shares i got a timeout and the unraid isn't longer accessible. Also the web interface isn't reachable anymore.

I also couldn't ping it.

 

So i started to search about this problem.

I found some who have the same problem as me where the problem was related to a read only usb stick.

I tested write access to the flash but thats no problem. i can write the syslog and other stuff.

also done checkdisc on the flash drive.

I also deleted the HWADDR Line in the network.cfg

 

I added a cache disc two days ago so i thought that may the problem, so i removed it. (there was no data on cause i forget to active the cache disc for the shares...)

Unraid booted up but same problem.

 

After some searching again i didn't find anything more which is related to my problem scenario.

 

So i start some problem investigation for myself.

 

My infos:

 

Unraid boots up

Web interface is up but it loads very slow

telnet up but very slow (not usable)

try to access smb - timeout, web interface gone

local ping to unraid from windows machine - packetloss - see log below

local ping to windows machine from unraid - packetloss - see log below

local ping to router from unraid - sry no log but only "From 192.168.1.1 icmp_seq=52 Destination Host Unreachable"

Unraid has gone from the routers "active device" list

copy syslog to flash - see log below

copy ifconfig to flash - see log below

shutdown

 

i have to say one thing.

I got one curious thing.

The Mac address of the eth0 interface was at first boot-up simply normal.

But since the second boot it shows 00 for the first 4 pairs of digits and only for the last one the correct digits. In the log you see only 00:00:00...

I didn't pay attention to this cause i couldn't change it and it looks like it isn't a problem since it works for weeks without problem.

It is always good to see users bravely attempting to make unapproved hardware work with unRAID, and I commend you for trying.  In your case, the odds are really stacked against you though.

 

1. The board is VIA based, and unfortunately, while there have been a few that worked (here is one), I don't think most users have had much success.  The few that did work often had various limitations and poor performance.

2. It is using a "Centaur VIA Eden Processor 1200MHz".  That is a 1.2GHZ single core processor, and I don't recall anyone using one as slow as that.  It does not mean it cannot work, but performance will be poor.  It is also a non-standard processor, that I have absolutely no experience with, but it does not inspire confidence in its compatibility.  I have been out of touch for awhile, so perhaps others have tested it.

3. You are running with only 446MB of RAM, somewhat less than our usual recommended minimum of 512MB.  I suspect you have 512MB of RAM minus a 64MB portion reserved for onboard video, so check the BIOS settings and see if you can revise that to the minimum possible for video use.  Even if you can adjust that to 8MB for video, giving you about 504MB for unRAID, you may have problems, because unRAID keeps growing, and there are so many good addons.  If you do get your system working satisfactorily, you will still need to be VERY selective with any addons.  Running out of memory is probably the number one way to crash unRAID.  I recommend at least 1GB of RAM.

 

You appear to have a Sil3114-based card on the PCI bus with 4 SATA drives.  You also appear to have a Realtek gigabit network chipset on your PCI bus.  That is going to be a serious bottleneck, with slower parity checks and builds, and possibly slower network access too during heavy disk I/O.

 

The syslog attached in the first post (that is the preferred way to attach it) looks very good, but it is only a record of a fresh boot, before any problems have occurred, so there is nothing that can be said about the problems that you have had.  Try to capture a syslog after you have had issues, and before rebooting.

 

From your comments, it sounds like you may have run out of RAM (and processes would have been shut down), and/or there are compatibility issues with your network chipset and/or motherboard.  This is just speculation though, without a syslog that captured the errors reported.

I bought this system cause i wanted to avoid Hardware problems.... and now this -_-

 

Ahm... this Syslog copy i made minutes after the problem occur.

 

 

But anyhow, when the hardware isn't good overall i think i'll rebuild it by myself.

I got an old HTPC with a core2duo and 1gig of ram (or maybe 2, but it's upgradeable) i think its an elitegroup or ASrock mainborad or something.

Have to look if it's on the supported hardware list.

 

I already thinked of an Hardware Upgrade cause the current Hardware couldn't take more than 6 drives...

Finally i changed the Hardware and it works again.

Cause this Board got a Realtek 8103EL/8102 Network Interface and until now this isn't listed in the list.

I know it's only 100mbit. buts it's on the board and does it'S job until i get another.

Great!  Looks like the board should work fine.  When I or someone else has a chance, we'll add that board to the Hardware Compatibility page.  As you probably know though, it's not likely to be very popular with only 4 SATA ports and 10/100 networking.  The network chipset is going to be your worst bottleneck, limiting all file transfer to and from your server to about 10MB/s speed.  If you can find a cheap gigabit card, you will double or triple that speed.

 

I too have been trying to get by with very cheap and used hardware.  The one thing I could not live without though, is gigabit networking, 10MB/s is sooooo slow.  But if you are going to be upgrading anyway, most modern motherboards come with built-in gigabit networking.

yeah it's slow, but better than nothing ^^

 

maybe i'll get a cheap gbit card but i think the currently setup will last for a while.

I finally want to build a Pro Server with 20 drives, and therefore i need another mainboard anyhow... (or more expensive controller)

 

Until then, HD movie streaming also works with 100mbit :)
