Power consumption of an ESXi box

Recommended Posts

Slightly OT - but wanted to get a quick poll from a couple of people that have a similar setup on what your energy use is on this?

My config:

i7 960

24GB Ram

1x Samsung Spinpoint F3

3x WDEARS 2TB

1x WD, older 500GB as Datastore

1x Samsung BDRom, passed thru to a VM

PCI cards:

Radeon 5670, passed thru to a VM

Intel NIC

IBM ServeRAID BR10i

ESXi set to Balanced Power plan, and speedstep and all that other power stuff set in BIOS.

Changing the power plan doesn't make too much of a difference.

I have it plugged into a Cyberpower 1500VA UPS unit that reports anywhere from 189W to 220W of usage. I can't shut anything down at the moment, but I believe this usage is the same before I power up any VMs.

Can a couple of you chime in? I don't want to hijack the thread, but would like to get some feedback to see if i'm doing something wrong.

My box at its lowest with my usenet downloader pounding away and unraid spundown is about 112-120W.

at full tilt with everything  busy and  unraid in parity check at about 164-170w.

I expect that to got down a couple Watts after I pull my extra raid cards out.

SM X9SCM-F-O

Xeon E3-1240

16 GB ram

3 SSD's

2 Datastore spinners

9 Hitachi 3TB Greens

3x HBA's (2 M1015's, 1 MV8)

1x Expander (Intel)

(See sig for more details)

My other ESXi box is about 220-240watts under load.

No idea on idol. if it is not in use, it is powered off.

Q9550

Some asus board

12GB RAM

2x Areca ARC-1222 Raid cards

16x Spin point F4 2TB drives.

old Geforce 9800 FX

Intel NIC Card

I would guess your  Higher usage might be, The I7, a desktop board with sound and other features, plus the high powered Video card.

This might be an interesting topic. power consumption of an ESXi box . Perhaps even the consumption Hardware it replaced... perhaps a mod split?

Just to put things in perspective:

SM X9SCM-F-O

Xeon E3-1230

16 GB ram

2 Datastore 500gb

18 x mixture of 5400 rpm drives (1tb -2tb greens)

2x HBA's MV8's

Running Parity check and a CPU heavy VM runs me about 250W~

I'm more than happy with tha number since I went from two boxes to one, I used to have a atom board running 15 drives  and it was around 195W~ adding 50W for a gain of more powerfull system and consolidating two machines into one im running a power savings of over 100w as my other VM box consumed over 200w with a Q6600 running maxed out.
