Seagate ST2000DM001 - Head Load/Unload Noise & Freeze

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm looking for a bit of advice on a problem/niggle I'm having with a new ST2000DM001 drive.

The drive spins up and runs, but during use I hear a crunching noise like this.

(not my video)

It appears to be a head load/unload cycle so I'm not concerned about the noise. However, it happened while reading from the disk and my windows PC which was accessing the array froze completely for around 20 seconds. I'm worried that if this happens during writing to the array the server may freeze too - affecting parity calculations.

Am I being paranoid or should I stop using these drives? (I have 2)

Thanks,

John

I think you're putting the horse before the cart.. newer seagate drives can be a bit "clicky".

That should be a pretty fast drive, 7200RPM with only 2 1TB platters.

I would just go ahead run it and see what happens. i'll assume your ran at least one preclear.

maybe do some testing if you're concerned. write lots of test data.

go ahead and push a ton of data to it with beyond compare or teracopy and verify the data. erase and do it again.
