RAM - mixing unbuffered and registered RAM
« on: June 19, 2012, 06:27:03 AM »
Hi there.. I built my box with 4Gigs of RAM - and now I'm starting to do more and more with the system and my / is starting to get larger and larger - 1.2 Gigs now. Since / is a RAM drive, this is valuable ram that my service can't use - correct?

So I'm thinking of upgrading my system to 8GB of ram. My original RAM is DDR3 1333 Unbiffered ram (2x2GB). That RAM doesn't seem to be available any more, http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139040, so I was thinking of getting Registered RAM instead (seems to be the closest match in a 2x2 kit).

So my question: Can I mix unbuffered and registered RAM? Am I better off replacing it all for Registered ram? Should I just get this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820139262 and upgrade to 12 Gigs? is there any point? I know you can't ever have too much RAM, but is 12 GB excessive?

I guess the other question to ask is how much RAM do I actually need? I'm running the following on 2.8 gigs of ram (given my 1.2 gig ram drive).

* unRAID
* Plex Media Server
* SABnzvd
* SickBeard
* CouchPotato
* Headphones
* Transmission

and I 'd like to add

* Apache/PHP
* MySQL

Cheers,

NO mixing.

What motherboard?

Adding ram is a good idea since you are running a long list, and adding mysql. I would considering going 12G.

Newegg still has individual sticks of your existing memory.  The K2/4G stands for (Kit of 2 4GB total) in the one you posted.  I would just buy some of these.  As c3 said: NO mixing.

No mixing. (might have been mentioned already.. :P )

I would just get the 8GB kit and go with 12GB.. problem solved.

whatever ram the system is not using, unraid will just use it as read cache...
