Fireball3
Hi, I precleared this drive twice. Unfortunately I didn't save the results of the first run but here is the most recent one. The test passed but as you can see, there are a lot of sectors pending re-allocation. Why isn't this done? The raw value of "Reallocated_Sector_Ct" is 0. I understand there are enough sectors left to re-allocate bad ones. What is your opinion? RobJ
Apart from the Pending sectors, the drive looks great, but you cannot ignore the increasing Pending sector count. Strange drive, I don't know why PreClear is not forcing the drive to deal with them. I'd normally suggest another PreClear, but since the increases are the result of the second one, there is no point in another. I would try a long SMART test and a destructive-write badblocks pass on the drive. If that does not clear them, I don't know what to tell you. I would not be comfortable putting this drive on line. Joe L.
I would not be comfortable putting this drive on line. Me either. RMA it. Quote Link to comment
Fireball3
I started another preclear run yesterday night and just had a short view on the progress this morning. Doesn't look good. It was doing the zeroing pass and write rate was about 7MB/s. Then I had a short look at the syslog which is 9MB and full of IO errors for the last 3 hours. I'm not sure if it's really the drive because I also started a parity rebuild and one more preclear on another drive. I can provide an excerpt of the syslog this evening. Now I restarted the preclear. The other tasks will finish in about 2 hours. So when it's zeroing time again the full resources will be available for this preclear process. @RobJ: How can I perform a destructive-write badblocks pass RMA-ing time is over. It's out of warranty since 12/2012 :-( Edit: I opened a ticket at WD and asked them why the drive is not reallocating the pending sectors. I'll keep you posted if they answer. Quote Link to comment
RobJ
@RobJ: How can I perform a destructive-write badblocks pass Assuming sdb is still the correct symbol for that drive (and please make sure of that! all data will be lost!): badblocks -wsv /dev/sdb It will probably take a very long time! Fireball3
Here are the syslogs. I had to shorten them in order to meet the size limitation of the forum. syslog-2013-08-21_2nd_preclear.txt ends on Aug 21 07:06:35 when I restarted the preclear. syslog-2013-08-21_3rd_preclear.txt ends on Aug 21 19:39:31 when I cancelled the 3rd preclear because there was no more progress. Zeroing was stuck at 3%, no change in bytes read count only time was counting up. syslog-2013-08-21_2nd_preclear.txt syslog-2013-08-21_3rd_preclear.txt Quote Link to comment
garycase
You definitely want to RMA this drive -- don't bother with any more testing, just get it replaced. Quote Link to comment
Fireball3
think so too... Can use it as a paperweight, warranty period is over. This is the report of crystaldiskinfo: It highlights C5 current pending sectors and C6 uncorrectable sector count smartctl used in unraid seems to be a bit out-dated.
