jazbo8
I like to use Silicon Logic based 3132 cards to add more drives to the array, any chance that Unraid will support them soon? Jaz Quote Link to comment
lionelhutz
It has been reported that it already does. Someone here is using SiL port multipliers. Peter Quote Link to comment
Jon
I've been on a Sil3132/3726 setup for months with no issues (other than a port going out, but the module was easily replaced). Quote Link to comment

That is great news! Which version of the unraid software are you using? Also, any special installation procedure required? Thanks, Jaz Quote Link to comment
Jon
Right now I'm on 4.5beta3, but I can't recall how many versions ago support was added. I didn't have to do anything to get it to work. Everything was discovered on first boot. Quote Link to comment
jazbo8
I'm on 4.4 still, will try this weekend and report back. Thanks! Jaz Quote Link to comment
Jon
Going back on my blog, I added my PM while on v4.3.2, so I can't foresee you having issues with that version. Quote Link to comment
Joe L.
Port multiplier support was first added in 4.3-beta1. The first main change in the 4.3 release is an upgrade to the linux 2.6.24.3 kernel. This kernel includes numerous driver updates and bug fixes. Hopefully the Realtec driver issues are behind us now. Another notable feature of this kernel is SATA Port Multipler support. This works with SIL313x host cards talking to SIL-based port multipliers. Quote Link to comment
jazbo8
I just fired up the Syba PCIe Sil3132 based card, detected by the system without any problem. Now I need to order a port multiplier card, also considering the Norco DS-1220 that has built-in port multiplier and comes with an 4 port eSATA controller card for the PC. Any other recommendation for multiplier card or array chassis welcomed! Thanks, Jaz http://www.norco.cn/ArticleShow.asp?ArticleID=62&BigClassName=Storage%20Array%20(inc%20NAS)&SmallClassName=Storage%20Array Quote Link to comment
RobJ
The SiI3132 has been supported as long as unRAID has had SATA support, but I noticed when checking the Hardware Compatibility wiki page, PCI SATA Controllers section, that the SiI3726 chipset was not listed. Seemed a good time to pull together all of the Port Multiplier discussion, so here it is: UnRAID Topical Index, Port Multiplier Support Probably more than anyone wanted to know ... Feel free to edit, prune, expand, correct ... Perhaps what some of these topics needs is to start with a quick 'Executive Summary'. Quote Link to comment

As I stated in my first post, the 3726 is supported...that's what I've been running mine on for months. Feel free to add it to the wiki. I would, but for some reason, I've never been able to get any addition of mine to go through. Quote Link to comment
RobJ
Sorry, I have been trying to keep my posts more concise. I should have added that I *did* add the SiI3726 to that page, on seeing your first mention of it above. (I'm not comfortable with the way I added it though. It may need its own category.) add it to the wiki. I would, but for some reason, I've never been able to get any addition of mine to go through. What errors are you seeing? We are always looking for more contributors! Please please try again! Quote Link to comment
jazbo8
I've been on a Sil3132/3726 setup for months with no issues (other than a port going out, but the module was easily replaced). Just went to Jon's cool site. http://www.thehtpc.net/page/2?s=unraid. Also after some digging, it seems the Norco DS-1220 utilies the Sil3726 multiplier, so it should work with the Sil3132 based cards. [EDIT] Found another multiplier chassis that may work, http://www.oceandat.com/product-detail-e.asp?id=15 - 15 drives for about $700 here in China. Jaz Quote Link to comment
fitbrit
Has anyone tried using this device/card package? http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ST-2350S-ESR Seems like a great price, and one can even add another 5-drive external enclosure using the included card. Problem is that there is no info on the chipset in the controller, and hence no info on whether it'd be unRAID compatible. I might still get it to play with anyway. Quote Link to comment

That looks very interesting, good price! Someone needs to verify it works first, evaluate the quality, and how good (and quiet) the fans are. It appears to have a SiI4726 chipset for the PMP support in the external box, so to fully support PM, it needs a SiI3124 or SiI3132 card, and since the included card has 2 ports, it is almost certainly a SiI3132 card, which is fully supported and widely used by unRAID'ers. fitbrit
Thanks for the info there, Rob. I think I'll definitely get it. MY mother-in-law can bring it up to me in Canada when she comes to visit next month. Right now, I'll replace one of my 750 GB drives with a 1 TB one to tide me over for expansion until then. I'll post a report when I've got it up and running. I'm really stoked about the new 20 drive version of unRAID Pro. I just checked on the Addonics site and shipping to Canada is very expensive. I think I'll try to buy Addonics stuff from within Canada when I can, or I'll try the no-name Starbox that I linked to before. It does seem that Addonics is providing cool products at a decent price if one's in the US though. Quote Link to comment
GoChris
I have one of these I picked up, but decided not to use it. I have tested that it works with unraid, that's about all the use it has received. For sale, in Canada, let me know if you are interested. http://www.sansdigital.com/towerraid/tr4m.html Quote Link to comment

jazbo8
I finally got my e-SATA unit and the upgrade went without a hitch, here is what I ended up with - Syba e-SATA controller http://www.syba.com/Product/Info/Id/5 , and OceanDat 6110 e-SATA drive bay cabinet http://www.oceandat.com/product-detail-e.asp?id=13 which has the SiL PM built-in.
