joe, my first preclear try with my brand new wd20ears got the same result as stradle, as you know

i did everything you said, and ran preclear again

now after 23 hours, it still is at step 2, at 30 % of it , and its been there for at least 10 hours, and not going further

now what? is something wrong?

It seems this raw read error rate keeps going down.  Is this a bad sign for the drive?  Also there wasnt any reallocated sector or pending.  I am wary because of all the bad comments on newegg about failures within a few months.

 

When the raw-read error rate reaches the "failure threshold" of 6 you can worry. Right now, it is not even close.  From what I can see the worst value was 099, so it has improved.    I'd keep an eye on it but not be terribly concerned.

Mine seems to have not gone too good.

This was a brand new 2Tb drive. Bought 3 of these and seem to have precleared the other 2 fine.

 

Only difference with this was that I was running 2 preclears at the same time.

It seems to have done a lot quicker as the same 2Tb drive took 25 hours on its own to preclear so to get to step 10 after 9hours makes me think something is up with it.

These were "2TB WD SATA2 WD20EARS 5400RPM" drives.

 

Now when I try and preclear that drive, its messed up and wont even display the information.

i got 3 brand new ones, and got with one of them same result...

i retried, and it hangs now..

i do find it strange that you have it too.. maybe something with the script i dunno

but that my and your drive has died.. i dunno

i never had any problems with new drives

what if we just format the drive and use it in the array

im really stuck here , someone else then?

The disk might have failed.  The power or data connector might have come loose.

 

If you get no output when you type

sfdisk -g dev/sdb

 

then there is nothing the preclear script can do to get it.

you can try to power cycle the drive.  (stop array, power down the server, and reboot)

i've already done that before like you said then..

its the second time.., so is something wrong?

I am getting similar results (after 45 hours) like this on a WD Green 2TB drive (no jumpers)

The difference is that I get out4= 00000 and out5= 00000, 0+0 records in & out, 0 bytes copied.

 

I tried some commands and got a script error...

I was running this pre-clear at the same time as other disks.

Should I try again by itself?  Is there a way to bypass *all* the tests?

 

BTW, I did not jumper it because I am setting things up to get ready for 5.0b3 to support these WD Green drives.

 

Yes, the drive has stopped responding.  (and the script was not coded to deal with that very elegantly)

 

Most people find they'll need to power cycle the drive to get it to respond again.

Even after that, many have had to clear the first few sectors to get it to respond sanely after changing the jumper (or adding it after the drive has been used without it being installed)

 

Basically, we've found it does not even respond to anything when locked up.  Not even an

fdisk -l /dev/sdb

will get complete results until you power cycle.

 

As far as skipping "tests" sorry... can't unless you don't want to clear the drive and ensure it is cleared.

I hate re-quoting long posts but this goes back 4-5 pages.

 

Anyways, after rebooting I went into fdisk and removed the existing empty NTFS partition that I had previously created when I first got it.

Now after 30+ hours with a preclear check (w/o jumper), it comes out just fine... ready to use.

can someone take a look at my result?

its a wd20ears which i used unjumpered, jumpered it, and precleared

is it safe to use?

 

 

 

Both disks look good.

 

Both successfully cleared, no re-allocated sectors, no sectors pending re-allocation.

sweet so i guess im lucky it worked for me to use an unjumpered disk before, jumper it and use it in unraid

Yes,

 

There are no re-allocated sectors, and none pending re-allocation, and no other parameter is "FAILING_NOW" (in the WHEN_FAILED) column.

Do you have any IDE disks in your system? If not then that disk you just successfully cleared is presenting itself as IDE.  There is more than likely a setting in your BIOS that is setting the ports that drive is on to emulate and IDE connection.

 

Beside that the drive looks fine.

 

Yes, 8 disks total, 4 are IDE. Including the one I just cleared. Thanks!  8)

I got this drive used. The preclear results show the Power On Hours =23. The Preclear took about 25 hours. Does this mean that the drive was used for 23 hours before the test started? Or does this include the preclear test hours?

It depends.  If that was from the smart report at the start of the preclear, then yes.  If from the report at the end, I'd not trust it be accurate unless the drive, even though "used" was really not used, and the preclear took 23 hours.
