Help with Interpreting Preclear Results.

Recommended Posts

I have 19 of these in various systems and on the last 17 of them I've done preclear and this is the first one that's flagged a change in the Throughput_Performance value.

The most recent 12 or so drives (including this one) have been precleared with the same unRAID config / preclear version on the same hardware (an HP N40L)

Is this a drive I should consider returning to Newegg for a replacement, or is it something else going on?

My view on this is that the disk is fine. I don't know why the preclear script has identified it as something to flag BUT based on what I know of the variable it indicates the general throughput performance of the disk. This variable is considered informational and is not an indicator of imminent failure (i.e. it wont ever contribute to a failed SMART status).

If the value of this attribute is deceasing there is a high probability of troubles with the disk. In your case the variable has INCREASED significantly, which is a good thing. Perhaps this is why the preclear script has flagged it.

Either way, IMHO, there is nothing wrong with that disk at all. I'd put it into service without hesitation.

Perhaps someone else can chime in here and offer their opinion too?

The old Preclear script just looked for changes, generally expecting them to be downward.  I'm hoping the new beta script/plugin will be smarter, only show changes that matter.  This throughput change should not have been displayed.

I absolutely agree. I have posted this thought over in gfjardim's thread for consideration for inclusion in his work:
