Looking to upgrade from WHS v1 to unRAID

Hello all,

 

My questions->

 

2)  I have one SAMSUNG Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB 5400 RPM drive now in my WHS.  It runs 25-30°C than the other 5 Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB drives!  I am not aware of any jumper settings possible on the Samsung F4 to set an offset.  Will these drives work, as designed, in unRAID?  I plan to pick up 5 just to copy out my existing WHS.  Then add the 5 x 1.5TB to unRAID.

No problem. I'm reading for my own educational purposes as I want to purchase the new Samsung F4.  ;D  Wished I had thought of IPMI before purchasing mine. 

 

btw, the SuperMicro X8SIL-F-O was Level 1 tested

Looks like a good choice in mb:

I own a C2SEA motherboard. I also own a X7SBE. I think that the X8SIL-F is more comparable to the X7. It uses ECC memory and has integrated IPMI. I think overall the X8SIL-F is a more robust server solution.

 

The C2SEA with an E3200 consumes very little power at idle. (I measured it, but can't put my hands on the figures right now). I would bet the X8 with a 530 consumes about the same or slightly less (~5W). If you want ECC memory and need IPMI then the X8 is very compelling compared to the X7. If you don't need those features, then the C2SEA will save you about $100 for the CPU and Motherboard combo.

 

I think both are fine options. IPMI is the big feature you are gaining.

Currently I'm reading 81 degrees Fahrenheit in my computer room.  My WHS is reporting 25 degrees Celsius for the drive in question.   WHS is reporting 48-51 degrees Celsius for the Seagate 7200.11 1.5TB drives I've been relying on. 

 

Big difference.

 

Yes, the Samsungs are often "natural born coolers" - 81 deg F is 27.2222222 degree Celsius  ;)

25 C Samsung HDD < 27.7 C room temp = IMPOSSIBLE

 

It is IMPOSSIBLE for a properly functioning hard drive to report temps below room temps. The only way is if your hard drive is actually an air-conditioner or is attached to a TEC cooler.

 

Your Samsung drive has a defective temp sensor. Many of us say it's a natural defect in nearly all samsung drives while some say it's a sign of a defective drive. Some estimate the temp sensors being off anywhere from 5 C to 10 C.

Or.. their "raw" temperature value is not one you can use without a offset.  (if for example we add 10 to their "raw" number... 35 degrees might be perfect.)  Remember, the "raw" values for most of the other attributes are meaningless to us as purchasers of the drives.
