[Solved] Cannot allocate memory error while crating new VM

Recommended Posts

I've had my server and 1 Windows 10 VM Up and running for a while, and today got an error while trying to add a second VM, I do not have the exact error, but it was an unable to allocate memory error.

I have 24 GB Ram total and was trying to allocate 8GB to each VM. I thought 8GB would be overkill for unraid itself, and even considered doing a 10 10 4 split.

Maybe I'm missing a setting somewhere that can tell unraid to only use so much RAM itself?

I was able to start setting up the VM by bumping it down to 4GB.

Here's the info from info page:

M/B: ASRock - C216 WS

CPU: Intel® Xeon® CPU E3-1270 V2 @ 3.50GHz

HVM: Enabled

IOMMU: Enabled

Cache: 1024 kB, 256 kB, 8192 kB

Memory: 24576 MB (max. installable capacity 32 GB)

I currently have the last 4 of 8 cores pinned to my gaming VM, I"m thinking about giving each VM 3 Cores and Unraid 8, will that work?

Hmm, were there a lot of write operations going on just before you tried doing this last time?  I'm wondering if RAM was holding a bunch of data in memory (write caching) and if it hadn't flushed enough yet for you to start the other VM.  With 24GB of RAM, there is no reason why 2 x 8GB VMs shouldn't be able to run concurrently.  That leaves PLENTY of RAM for the OS + other apps in Docker.
