Recommended Posts

Tried working through this on my own, without much success.

I've got mobo audio working, but need some help to get the soundcard working on unRaid 2

I don't see the audio device in your XML.  I only see the video card.  You need to add the sound card from the Edit VM page.

Thanks, Jon

Are you referring to Creative Labs EMU20k2 [X-Fi Titanium Series]?

I have selected this previously with no success.

Other potential selections include:

AMD SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

I've used this to successfully connect audio through mobo

And AMD RV770 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4850/4870]

And None

And None

Explain "no success".  Does Windows Device Manager show the device at all (even if it's got a question mark next to it)?

Thanks, Jon

By "no success" I mean no sound registering through the speakers.

Found that I was able to get sound through soundcard with Device Manager displaying "High Definition Audio Device" or similar.

Switching driver to SB X-Fi Creative rendered no sound.

Got some rest. Came back to it.

From Tools/System Devices

extracted this line:

07:00.0 Audio device: Creative Labs EMU20k2 [X-Fi Titanium Series] (rev 04)

Added to xml:

    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>

      <driver name='vfio'/>

      <source>

        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x07' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>

      </source>

    </hostdev>

In Edit VM, selected Sound Card: Creative Labs EMU20k2 [X-Fi Titanium Series]

In Device Manager on Windows 8.1 VM "Creative SB X-Fi" displayed, but no sound resulted.

Reinstalled SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium 2.40.0008 audio driver from SB website.

No sound.

Tried a few other things, without much luck.

Along the way, I updated .NET  but did manage to get PAX MASTER PCI XFI Driver Suite 2015V 1.15 ALL OS Stable Drivers Default Tweak Edition

installed after enabling ASP .NET 4.5 through Prorgram or Features/Windows Features On or Off

So I currently have the full suite of Sound Blaster software installed and adjusted properly.

There are a couple unusual things that occur by default that can get a guy hung up with the Sound Blaster X-Fi Suite in a standard Widnows 8.1 if he isn't aware.

For instance, there is a Mode Switcher to toggle between three different settings: Entertainment Mode, Game Mode, and Audio Creation Mode. Entertainment Mode needs to be selected. Restarting the machine defaults to Game Mode, which needs to be switched to Entertainment Mode for things to work properly again. A bug that was never resolved.

Also, there is an option to select audio device. Obviously, the right audio device/driver needs to be selected.

So if it were a standard install, things should be working from that perspective.

Sometimes I've had to reinstall SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium 2.40.0008 audio driver from SB website to get things working properly after installing PAX.

For shits and giggles, did that, with no sound resulting.

So currently, in summary as things stand:

No audio is being rendered from sound card.

As a note, switching to the hidden "High Definition Audio Device" gives me sound through the sound card, but doesn't allow me to start any of the Creative software, either. So that doesn't allow me to take advantage of the Sound Blaster/PAX suite of software to take advantage of advanced audio settings, such as number speakers, bass, eq, crystalizer, surround, yadda yadda.

Device Manager is showing "Creative SB X-Fi" under Sound, video and game controllers.

Ok, I'm going to have to drop a note to the VFIO mailing list on this.  I know a few people have reported issues.

Can I ask, does this issue occur using a non-Windows guest?  For example, have you tried the unRAID 6.1 release candidate?  We have OpenELEC available as a template that can be quickly added (no "install" required) and I'm curious if your sound card works fine with it.  This would at least help narrow down the root cause.

With a bit of direction, I'll be able to help test that.

Just prior to your last message, I dug my heels in a bit deeper to get a better handle on how all this is fitting together, and been able to understand a follow along a bit better recommended thread:

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=38259.0

Not working yet, but here are the results...

Disconnected other pcie/pci devices for the time being

Changed slots for soundcard

# lspci -knn

        Subsystem: Creative Labs SB0880 [soundBlaster X-Fi Titanium PCI-e] [1102:0041]

      <source>

        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x05' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>

Resulted in this change to XML:

    <qemu:arg value='-device'/>

    <qemu:arg value='vfio-pci,host=05:00.0,bus=root.1,addr=01.0'/>

In Edit VM selected soundcard as:

Creative Labs EMU20k2 [X-Fi Titanium Series]

In Windows8.1 VM Device Manager, audio was not found (red "X" over speaker icon in system tray) and all sound devices in were hidden

Reinstalled SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium 2.40.0008 driver

Restarted

Audio icons in system tray appear as normal.

Device Manager displays "Creative SB X-Fi"

No sound

Rebooted unRaid

ok, let's try something.  Open up your webGui to the Main tab and click on the word Flash so that we can edit your Syslinux.cfg.

Locate this section:

label unRAID OS (GUI)
  menu default
  kernel /bzimage
  append initrd=/bzroot

Change it to this:

label unRAID OS (GUI)
  menu default
  kernel /bzimage
  append pci-stub.ids=1102:000b initrd=/bzroot

What this does is it locks the device from being ever initialized by the host.  You'll need to reboot your unRAID system after applying this change for it to take affect.  You can see that it's working after rebooting by typing lspci -k and looking for your device, then seeing that it's bound to the driver pci-stub.

Thank you, Jon.

Been away for a month and just got back. Responding to your earlier post, fired up OpenElec, and confirmed sound card is playing nicely within OpenElec. However still not viewable in device manager of Windows 8.1.

Modified the Syslinux.cfg file as instructed. Output shows as you suggested with lspci -k, however device still not appearing in device manager.

Here is the output from lspci -k:
