First NAS OS that Plays and Stores Media and Games on the Same System
SAN MARCOS, CA – June 15, 2015 – Lime Technology announced today the release of unRAID® Server OS 6, which enables enthusiasts to play content directly from the same system that is storing and protecting it. Using any media player application they want, users can eliminate network bottlenecks that can cause buffering during media playback. Through virtualization, users can also play games on their big screen, back up or stream media to other devices, share files, and sync content.
Most traditional approaches for delivering entertainment to the living room rely on disparate devices to store and play content. With its capabilities as a NAS, unRAID stores and protects data* and makes it available to other devices on the network. There are also separate devices in the living room for playing games vs. playing media. As a virtualization host, unRAID 6 collapses these capabilities into a single appliance, thereby reducing equipment needed while improving the experience.
“One of the things that has always frustrated home AV fanatics like myself is the constant “buffering” issues that we’re forced to suffer while playing content to our TVs,” said Jon Panozzo, chief strategy officer, Lime Technology. “unRAID solves this problem by removing the need to traverse the local network for playback.”
In addition to playing content directly to the TV, unRAID makes it easy to partition system resources to other applications. Examples include: Plex to stream media to other devices, SteamOS to stream games with better-than-console graphics, ownCloud to share files, and CrashPlan to back up other data.
Pricing and Availability
unRAID Server OS 6 comes in three versions: Basic, Plus and Pro and pricing starts at $59. More information may be found at lime-technology.com.
